“King for a Day”

Today is the second anniversary of the death of Dave Brubeck. He was a jazz musician known for using unusual metres in his music such as in the popular jazz piece “Take Five” which is in 5/4 metre. He was a pianist, a composer and bandleader of the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

For my ABRSM Grade 8 exam, I performed the piece by Dave Brubeck, “King for a Day”. Below is the Dave Brubeck Quartet performing the piece in concert. The first minute or so is a solo instrument. If you find it boring, you can skip that part and start at 1:24 where the rest of the band comes in and the piano especially introduces the melody that is used in the piano arrangement. Then it’s the piano arrangement used in the ABRSM Grade 8 exam.
